Minutes of the Meeting held 10th April 2001

APOLOGIES

None were needed, and none were given.

MINUTES OF THE LAST MEETING

Passed as VALID.

MATTERS ARISING

JOB DESCRIPTIONS

This would pend for renewed renewal and discussion at the Away Day.

INTERNET COMPILATION ALBUM

Another copy had been sent to John Peel, and Mr Hibbett had FACTed Interweb journalists on the Independent, Guardian, Times and Telegraph. We could only wait to see the result.

BPI

This would PEND.

COMPETITION PROPOSAL

This would be discussed at the Away Day.

FIND PINKY

Mr Hibbett would ask Pauly de Popex about this.

NOMINATION OF NEW BOARD MEMBER

After some discussion the nomination of Steve Dresden to the Board was seconded, and unanimously agreed upon. His title and responsibilities would be formalised later, and he would be invited to the Away Day.

ORGANISATIONAL ISSUES

WEBPAGES

The new Frankie Machine single should be included on the releases page.

NEWSLETTER

This would be released prior to the Frankie Machine single – Mr Hibbett would get it sorted out.

PLUGGERS

Mr Whitaker reported that he had received some royalties from them for the Wandrin’ Allstars single – hoorah! Mr Fleay, now that he had the new Frankie Machine single, would send them a bumper pack of singles joy.

DISTRIBUTION

The release date for the Frankie Machine single had been set for May 8th. Mr Whitaker was still waiting for a response to his question about the Exciting New Format Idea.

FINANCE

Mr Fleay reported that he had invoiced Prime, and expected a healthy cheque to arrive soon. Meanwhile Mr Whitaker was pending his approach to Left-Legged Pineapple to ascertain sales of the MJ Hibbett single over the interweb.

AWAY DAY

This was now booked for the Millstone Inn Hathersage for the weekend of April 28th/29th. The board agreed to meet at Derby station at about one o’clock, and go from there via the Fleaymobile. Issues to be discussed included revised job descriptions, the Competition, AGM formats, and the issue of releases i.e. last time we had agreed that we would not simply become a company for releasing MJ Hibbett and Frankie Machine records, though this was largely what had happened. The Away Day would also discuss why this was, how to remedy it, and whether we wanted to remedy it. There was lively discussion about other possibilities, at the end of which Mr Fleay RESPONSIBLY set a limit of £160 (ish) for spending over the weekend.

FOOTBALL

The differing fortunes of our various teams were discussed, largely comparing Derby’s dodginess with the dying valiance of Bradford.

A&R

FRANKIE MACHINE

The new singles had arrived, and they looked BEAUTIFUL. A release date was set for May 8th, and Mr Fleay would FACT a copy of the press release to Mr Whitaker so he could FACT it onwards to Prime, where he would also ask how many copies were needed. The press list was in hand, being largely the same people who received copies last time.

A gig had been sorted out on May 3rd in Bath, with further possibilities in Nottingham and Norwich. Mr Hibbett would try and sort out a London gig, and FACT Birmingham and Sheffield venues, while Mr Fleay would consider the possibility of a Derby gig.

Finally Mr Fleay reported that the album was coming along OK, with about 75% complete and 25% mixed.

MJ HIBBETT

Board members had enjoyed the tape of the CUR session, with “Falling For Trust” being adjudged the strongest track. Mr Hibbett thrilled the meeting for Quite Some Time with various Ideas, and then reported that the band had recently been in the studio to make some new recordings, which would be finished off soon.

JOHNNY DOMINO

The Domino were looking into the possibility of making their next album an interactive multi-media extravaganza, including video and all sorts. It was quite possible this time that they would be selling it over the internet, but we would have to see,

SALOON

The band were going over to New York to mix their album. Ooh! Hark at them! Mr Fleay also reported that their single “Impact” would be coming out very soon on Glamour Puss fanzine’s label.

THE FRIGHTENED PRISONERS OF THE KRAKEN

It was revealed that their album would be called “Man Car Plane”, as that was what was on the cover, and their followed a lengthy discussion about what their pally shortened name should be, with “The Kraken” the eventual winner. Then there was a REALLY long discussion about politics, for not much apparent reason.

Anyway, they were really keen to get going, and quotes had been obtained for costs, with Mr Whitaker agreeing to get in touch with A to Z. Also, Mr Fleay would ask the band to send a CD-R copy to Overground, to see if we could get a quote for them for plugging, following which the Board would discuss the possibility of AAS contributing to some costs. Messrs Fleay and Whitaker then raved about how GRATE the album was, singing their favourite lines to each other, while Mr Hibbett looked Confused. After a while, he mentioned that he had listened to the tape given to him by Mr Fleay, and had heard none of this, rather a long serious of unconnected samples, strange noises, and Wind Sounds – imagine the hilarity, when it turned out that the tape had been labelled on the wrong sides, and all this time he had been listening to a rubbish demo of nonsense! The meeting LAUGHED outrageously, and Mr Hibbett pledged to listen to the correct side as soon as he got home.

DENVER & CARWASH

All was doom and gloom – the programmers they had been in touch with had turned out not to be too good, the budget was too tight, and Jyoti was too busy to work with them. Mr Whitaker shrugged his shoulders valiantly, determined to carry on somehow.

WANDRIN’ ALLSTARS

Mr Whitaker passed out copies of some new (unfinished) material for listening and feedback.

ANY OTHER A & R

THE TEENBEAT

Nothing had been heard from them.

RUSK

Mr Fleay had received a demo from them, which did not sound very well recorded – he had told them this, also that the singer had a GRATE voice and they had a lot of energy live, but needed to record it better and get some better songs. They had AGREED with him, which was lucky.

HYDRA

As part of Mr Fleay’s Derby Band Odyssey, he had also seen these.

TERRASHIMA

Mr Fleay reported that these were like the Stooges, which was GOOD, and recommended that Board members go and see them when next they had the chance – these would be MONITORED further.

CONDENSOR

These had been seen and thought to be OK.

THE CARTEL

PROG.

CORRESPONDENCE

There had been a very 80’s sounding postbag of demos this month, which were handed out, and the Board gave their thoughts on last month’s bunch – there were no new Krakens amongst them.

ANY OTHER BUSINESS

Not really.

DATE OF NEXT MEETING

The next meeting would take place at the Three Nuns, Loughborough at 8.00pm on May 15th.
